After struggling at daybreak, we stumbled on a hot gobbler, but he was across the road on private land. No matter, this gobbler was HOT and a few calls later, he was running to us and gave Doug and I an exciting finish to a great spring. Not long after, we picked up more gobblers, but they weren’t about to make things easy. Henned up and moving away every time we set up, they consistently slipped away from our position. Each time they drifted, we circled wide, trying to get ahead of their line of travel, but it felt like they were one step ahead, slipping past or fading away just out of reach. We stayed with them for hours until they eventually went quiet. An owl call got no response, but a last-ditch crow call finally pulled a gobble from birds, now hundreds of yards away. We started to move on in search of more cooperative birds, but at the last second, we committed to one more attempt on these gobblers. Making a big loop to cut them off again, we set up in a perfect position. When we struck them once more, it only took a few well-placed calls to pull a gobbler up and over the hill, and into range to investigate. Joel and I met up with her one spring morning to see how she’d handle herself in the turkey woods. Our first setup brought a longbeard into range, but a gang of jakes chased him past us, and Alex made the smart call to hold off rather than risk a bad shot. At the next stop, a wary old gobbler slipped in, using trees for cover the whole way. When he finally stepped clear, Alex didn’t hesitate, making a clean shot and proving she’s a natural. Using onX Hunt, we made a big loop to try and get ahead of the flock. Once in position, our calls got no response, so we relied on patience and trusted our instincts. After sitting quietly and listening, we began hearing faint drumming, confirming the birds were still nearby—and things quickly got interesting. After 15 quiet minutes, I hit the ceramic pot with a few soft clucks and a yelp — and a gobbler fired back instantly. We eased in to set up, still close to the road, when a truck rolled by… slowed near mine… and kept going. Then it came back. And slowed again. While we worked the bird, the truck made multiple passes, raising real concerns about someone eyeing my vehicle.
